About Cloudways

Cloudways was founded in Malta in 2012 by Aaqib Gadit and Pere Hospital as a managed-hosting layer that sits on top of other companies' cloud infrastructure rather than running its own datacenters. Its platform provisions and manages servers on five underlying IaaS providers -- DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, Linode, and Vultr -- wrapping them in its ThunderStack performance stack (Nginx, Apache, Varnish, Redis, PHP-FPM) and managed WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and Laravel hosting. DigitalOcean acquired Cloudways in a $350 million cash deal announced in August 2022 and closed that September, and it now operates as a DigitalOcean brand; the combined company reported serving more than 124,000 customers at the time of the deal.
