RunPod grew out of a side project: developers Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh had sunk about $50,000 into GPU rigs for Ethereum mining in their New Jersey basements, and when mining stopped paying off they repurposed the hardware for AI workloads instead. They posted about it on Reddit in 2022 offering free server access for feedback, and the company grew from there without much traditional marketing. RunPod raised a $20 million seed round in May 2024, co-led by Intel Capital and Dell Technologies Capital, then raised roughly $100 million more at close to a $1 billion valuation as its GPU cloud business scaled.
