Salad (legal entity Salad Technologies, Inc.) was founded in 2018 by Bob Miles, who remains CEO, around the idea of paying PC and GPU owners for their idle compute. Its consumer app lets "Salad Chefs" earn credit by contributing spare capacity from gaming machines, and SaladCloud resells that pooled capacity to developers as low-cost GPU compute -- a container engine for GPU workloads plus transcription and image-generation inference -- rather than running its own datacenters. That distributed network spans consumer GPUs in well over a hundred countries, and the company says it has paid out several million dollars to the machine owners who supply it. Salad raised a $17 million Series A in April 2022, co-led by Left Lane Capital and Origin Ventures.
